THE ROLE OF SCI-FI IN OUR LIVES

In a world where technology is growing at a rate like never before, in a world where limitless possibilities hang in front of us; it’s tempting to ask- Why do we still hang on to science fiction and fantasy? Presently, science fiction and fantasy works are the most popular. Be it books or movies, science fiction is a hot topic. But why?

After all, now we all have  gadgets in our pockets and in our homes that we haven’t dreamed about , devices that outstrip the fantasies of yester science fiction— to be honest, we all own devices that can do a bajillion things and still we  persist in writing and reading science fiction.

The most obvious and common answer would be that, science fiction broadens our imaginative horizons. It plants little visuals in our brain that inspire us and push us to achieve our dreams. It propels us to think. It makes us desire for little contraptions that could respond to us, that can make us fly, that would ensure we could sneak like ninjas, fight like warriors- all our fantasies. And it’s true that science fiction and fantasy have both prompted the creation of technological marvels.

But I think it’s pretty inaccurate to credit the genre for all the advances. People have ambitions and experiment regardless of what genres of books they read. The real power of science fiction I guess, lie in its ability to interpret the world around us, to investigate parts of our existence that are too complex, too subtle, to explain the unexplainable with more than facts, figures and numbers.  Sci fi answers the questions that haunt us, with imagination. They replace what we know and can see with what could be…

As with all tweaked and adjusted perspectives, there’s danger in them: it may not always make sense, you may not agree with it, you may frustrate with its naivety; however, for moments you have stepped in someone else’s shoes. You have seen a different side and you know what it feels like. And it inspires and changes you. Would time travel feel so alluring if you hadn’t felt the magic in H.G Well’s Time Machine, without Hermione’s time turner, without ‘Back to the future’?

While present day science talks about, well, the science part of things- the principles involved. Science fiction talks about its effect on our lives. When science talks about time machines, it talks about string theories and alternate dimensions and Einstein’s theorems. However, when science fiction talks about time travel it talks about possibilities, effects- Maybe the world is dying and you go back to fix it, that sort of stuff. It’s a different perception. It’s fun, entertaining and definitely gives you something to think about.

Science fiction is a kind of laboratory where each one of us can intellectually toy with all sorts of ideas. It’s a world in your head where you control and assume all sorts of assumptions from governments to society to physics. Its free of the barriers of reality.

Science fiction is an important tool to show us the full spectrum of possibilities for tomorrow and paints it in front of us.

The stories science fiction shows us, is itself a blueprint for the universe, a universe which we create…

KASHMIR – Paradise on Earth

Our long awaited summer vacation to Kashmir finally started on 19th April 2018. By flight, we reached Srinagar-the summer capital of Kashmir. It was very pleasant and beautiful. We also made snowballs and played throwing each other. It was mind-blowing experience.

Intellectual Property Rights- Innovations and Patents

INNOVATIONS AND PATENTS

“A patent is the grant of a property right by a sovereign authority to an inventor”

A patent is an exclusive right granted for an invention, which is a product or a process that provides a new way of doing something / offers a new technical solution to a problem. To get a patent, technical information about the invention must be disclosed to the public in a patent application. A patent gives you a legal right to stop others from making, using, or selling something you have invented for up to 20 years.
(Example) How to legally protect your Invention?

Father: Kids, I have invented revolutionary oil which will make India less dependent on imported oil.
Kids: Wow, Dad that’s great. So what will you do now Dad?
Father: You know I would like to protect this invention so that no one else can copy it without my knowledge. That is through a Patent. See I have already got a lot of patents for my other works. It can be for a product or a process and should be novel, inventive and industrially applicable. Patent is an exclusive monopoly right granted by the government to an inventor for 20 years for the invention.
Uncle: A well – known company wants to license your innovative oil and they are offering 60 lakhs for it. Are you interested?
Father: Yes Of course, but first let’s file for a patent application.
Kids: Wow, this is good.
Uncle: Hope the Patent Applications have been filed?
Father: Yes, I have filed the Patent Applications. I am so happy, that my Inventions are legally protected.
Uncle: Congratulations! You have made India Proud.

If you have an Invention that you would like to have legally protected, it’s a good idea to get acquainted with Intellectual Property Law in general. With a Patent, you can license to other companies or go into business yourself; but failure to properly register your patent can end your dreams. Hence the more you invent, make sure they are also patented.

Mission Earth

MISSION EARTH

The year is 2500. The dawn of a new century. Pollution free crackers were being burst. There was much joy among the people. It was also the 100th anniversary of their intergalactic move to Scandia, a rare planet situated 256 trillion kilometers away from their former home, Earth. The planet functioned as one unit. Away from the joy, though, a worried soul was present. The head of the National Science laboratory, prof. Anand Lawrence, waited as the last person exited the Laboratory. He pulled out his file and studied it. Years of tireless work had paid off. This experiment was a success. Only one thing remained. It was a journey too treacherous, even for the brave man. He had to do it alone. He walked up to the bookshelf and pulled out a book titled ‘a mission to our former planet’. Instantly a trap door opened up. He slid through it. Waiting for him was an utterly marvelous sight: a spaceship simply called “the traveller”. He beheld it with a look of admiration on his face. Capable of going at 3 trillion km an hour and holding supplies for 2 years, it was a perfect fit for his needs. He climbed in and started his engine. He wondered if this engine could hit the 3 trillion kilometers per hour mark the makers claimed in its advertisements. Curiosity got the better of him. Well, only one way to find out. He pushed the throttle to full. Mistake. He passed out due to all the G-Force exerted on his body.

When he woke up, he found himself in a deserted place. To his right, he saw the debris of a huge thing. He was too tired to identify it. He got up and with as much energy as he could muster, started walking. He knew not where he was going, nor why. He just walked. As the sunset, he began to lose all hope of surviving. Just then, a tall figure rose from the horizon. A building! A Human settlement! With renewed energy, he managed to make it through. And he passed out again.

On arrival, he rushed to the shelter. They found that he had a fracture on his left arm and internal bleeding. Leading that effort was Anita parker, the surgeon. “She saved my life1 he thought”. He was given food and water later by her as well. He slept a peaceful sleep that night knowing that he still had a lot of work to complete.

The professor spent two days exploring and investing the Earth. He carried out everything from Humidity test to blood cell levels. He knew that the data collected here, let alone the fact that the people on earth and there was a suitable spaceship to go there, would be a huge hit. The inhabitant amazed the professor with their knowledge and efficiency. The people even managed to fix ‘The traveller’ to a certain extent, despite it being a very advance machine. Only the main turbo was missing. It was a vital cog in the spaceship. The people were befuddled. The professor seemed resigned to his fate as stranded. All of a sudden Anita Parker, had a bright idea. She rushed to a nearby Junkyard. After what seemed like an hour of searching, she came up with funky – looking part. She brushed the dust off it. The people gasped. She was holding the TurboG4, the exact part the professor needed! They quickly fitted it onto the spaceship.

It was time to say goodbye. A warm friendship had developed between the people and the professor. As the spaceship lifted off, the professor stole a glance at Anita. He then knew, with utmost certainty, that the saviour of his life was standing before his eyes.

Happiness

Happiness is a combination of how satisfied you are with your life and how good you feel on a day to day basis. We have the ability to control how we feel and with consistent practise we can form life long habits for a more satisfying and fulfilling life.

Here are few tips to stay happy:

  1. Socialize with your friends, watch comedy shows, funny movies.
  2. Figure out who you truly enjoy with. Give as much time as you can for people who really enjoy your company and whom you enjoy being with.
  3. Trust yourself and others. Even if things in life don’t seem to be working in your favour, trust in yourself will always protect you.
  4. Accept yourself and the world around you. Remember to better yourself as you better other things around you.
  5. Be motivated by love and not fear. Let love guide you to a better life worth working for.
  6. Let go bad things that happened in your life. Focus on what you enjoy and what works for you. Let go what you cannot control, negative emotions like guilt, shame.
  7. Surround yourself with people and experiences that support the life you want. Make sure the people you spend most time with are both positive and affirming. The people you are close in life don’t necessarily need to believe in and value exactly what you need. You just want to be sure they respect and support the person you are.
  8. Our lives are defined by deadlines, target and stress of course. We are always in a hurry to do something to make plans for the future. Worrying always about our future will not make our today beautiful. But living in the present will give you peace of mind.
  9. Be kind to yourself. Many of our actions might not lead to positive results always. But there is no need to be harsh on yourself. Be compassionate to yourself and always make it a point to learn from our mistakes.
  10. Researchers suggest that if you develop your strong areas, you will be more productive and happy.
  11. There is a strong relationship between diet, physical activity, sleep and mood. If you want to be happier get adequate sleep, eat well balanced food, exercise regularly.
  12. Meditation can help us relax, stay in the moment and be more mindful in thinking and emotions. When we are deeply relaxed, when our mind and body is quiet, we recover quickly from stress. Developing a meditation practice can be a great way to cope with a fast-paced life and cultivate more positive emotions.

Never give up on Yourself

NEVER GIVE UP ON YOURSELF…

Having faith on one’s own self is the is the first step towards success. In today’s busy world we have only one anchor that’s ‘myself. We should never doubt our potentials and competences. We should be our own rival and anchor.

Making feeble excuses or pushing the blame of our failures on others is the attitude of an escapist. Life is all about exploring new avenues and challenges. Every stage of life comes with its own set of intricacies and complexities.

We all reach a point in our lives when we want to give up on everything. We start losing faith in ourselves and doubt our capacities. We start questioning ourselves because no matter what we do it seems we never manage to do it right.

History is witness to the fact that all renowned personalities have faltered at some point of time in their lives. These failures were sometimes minor sometimes monumental. What would have happened if these people had stopped believing in themselves and given up? Who would have handheld us through the alleys of Hogwarts if Rowling had given up on herself after facing rejections from publishing houses?

The world is full of endless possibilities. Even through the endless array of failure and pain people have not given up hope and belief and have tasted success. The magic eventually happens. It’s like a flame waiting to be kindled and set ablaze.

We should think positively with utter belief in our abilities and the future. We ought to take charge of our thought process. Negative thinking fosters negative emotions such as fear, stress and anxiety. We must avoid pondering over thoughts of disappointment and failure.

We must believe in ourselves no matter what anyone else says or what we endure. We shouldn’t allow anyone to help convince us that we are not worthy of accomplishing or achieving something. We all have different journeys in life, and not everyone is fashioned in the same way. We will learn unique lessons in life at different phases of our lives. The important thing is to never give up the hope and the belief in our self and in our future no matter what happens.
