Quick Divisibility- Part 1

 Quick Divisibility – Part 1
Hello, this time I will discuss about Quick divisibility tests which will be useful in finding the factors of a number. This is very handy when solving questions involving L.C.M and G.C.F of numbers .
Checking whether a number is exactly divisible by 7, 13 ,19 ,23, 27,29,31 is difficult by using multiplication table . Quick divisibility tests, sequentially starting from 2, are discussed below. This saves a lot of time while finding factors.
1. Test for 2 – If unit digit is 0,2,4,6,8 2 the number is divisible by 2 . (even numbers )

2. TEST for 3 – If the sum of digits of a number is divisible by 3. EX- 12345, sum of digits is 1+2+3+4+5 = 15 , which is divisible by 5 . So the number 12345 is divisible by 3 .

3 . Test for 4 – If the number formed by last 2 digits is divisible by 4 . EX- 123456 , the number formed by the last 2 digits is 56 , which is divisible by 4 . So 123456 is divisible by 4

4 .Test for 5 – Unit digit is 5 or 0 .

5.Test for 6 – If it is divisible by both 2&3 .( Number is even and sum of digits is divisible by 3)

6. Test for 7 –

(1) 3 digit number – Multiply the unit digit by 2 and subtract it from the rest . If the result is divisible by 7, whole number is divisible by 7 . Ex- 945 , unit digit is 5 and rest is 94 , 94 – 2×5 = 84 , which is divisible by7 , So 945 is divisible by 7 .

(2) For numbers having minimum of 4 digits – If q is number formed by last 3 digits and p is number made up of rest of the numbers , then if ( p-q ) is divisible by 7 , then the whole number is divisible by 7 .

Four digit number – 9331 ,q= number formed by last 3 digits = 331 , p = rest of the numbers = 9 p – q = 9 – 331 = – 322 ,which is divisible by 7 Hence 9331 is divisible by 7 .

Five digit number – 34426 , p=34 , q =426 , p – q = 426 – 34 = 392 which is divisible by 7 ( since it is now a 3 digit number you can test it as discussed above , 39 – 2×2=35, divisible by 7 ) Hence 34426 is divisible by 7 .

Six digit number – 976213 , p = 976 , q = 213 , p – q = 976 -213 = 763 which is divisible by 7 . So the number 976231 is divisible by 7 .

To be Continued.

Prejudice

Prejudice means having preconceived notions about some one or to judge some one without actually knowing that person. We all pre judge people and most of the times we do it involuntarily. We judge people according to their reaction towards one particular event. We do not try to think about that person’s behavior in past. E.g. When our friend says something negative about us, immediately we misunderstand him/ her and either start fighting or we stop talking. At this point we should keep our calm and go back to past experiences. We should think what good our friend has done to us and what could be the possible reason of his present behavior.  We have to learn to trust people. Lets look at a small story. Once there was a small crab who was walking on the beach. He turned back to see his beautiful footprints. He was admiring them as he was walking. Suddenly a wave from the ocean came and wiped the footprints. The crab said to the ocean “why did u do this? I thought you were my best friend”. The ocean said “ a fisherman was trying to catch you and was following your footprints, so I washed them away my dear!”. The crab was very sorry for doubting his best friend. So we should learn to trust people and give them a fair chance.

When we meet strangers we often judge them on the basis of their belongings(car, house), brand of clothes, looks and even on their skin colour. Like a popular saying goes “don’t judge a book by its cover”. At times a very ordinary looking person wearing very ordinary clothes can be a scholar. E.g.: we know Mother Teresa. She wore very simple clothes, but her contribution towards humanity was enormous. There are several examples of great people who were under estimated because of their simplicity. Mahatma Gandhi, Swami Vivekananda shook the world with their teachings, but when the western people saw their simple clothes and skin colour, they insulted them. Mahatma Gandhi had a 1st class train ticket while travelling in South Africa  but because of his skin colour he was ejected out of the train.

At times we also see poor people , wearing shabby clothes, we tend to ignore them, detest them instead of helping them. May be if we give them opportunities they can prove helpful to the community. Instead if we misbehave with them, a kind of hatred will develop inside them towards the society which can force them towards doing antisocial deeds.

At the end of the day we should remember that God has created everyone. Everybody has some good and bad qualities. We should learn to love every creature and help people who lack opportunities. If we spread love, we will get back love!

We should also remember this that before judging a person or reacting to his actions, we should give them a chance and learn to believe them. Be it strangers or our own friends, we have to trust them before doubting, love them before hating and understand them before judging!

Bali, Indonesia.

Bali, Indonesia.

Well, it can be called a stroke of luck that landed us to a breathtakingly beautiful Bali, an island in Indonesia. We reached Denpasar, the capital, in the afternoon and our hotel, The Holiday Inn Beach Resort, Kuta was just ten minutes drive from the airport.

The five nights and six days trip started off with a mesmerizing view of the glittering azure Indian Ocean from the reception of the hotel. The balmy weather brought us to the beach till the evening, which was again a surprise. The gentle calm scenario changed into a happening night life with streets buzzing with tourists, shops, music and eateries with inviting aromas of the local Indonesian cuisines of sea food and fresh fruits and veggies.

The second day started with a tour to the exotic art galleries, the first one being a Batik
village
, where local artisans showcased the beautiful Batik printing. Next we witnessed some amazing wood carving where crafts men were seen carving unbelievable wooden sculptures, which I had never seen before.  We also came across some intricately designed gold and silver jewelry. All the products were for sale as well in these art galleries. From there we were taken to the Kintamani Volcano, an active volcano that was said to have erupted some two years back. What a moment when we sat in a restaurant there, facing the volcanic mountains with their open peaks and wondering about the beauty and the fury of nature, the cool breeze, being a welcome surprise. The day ended in a coffee plantation where we were taken through the process of making the world famous and the most expensive Luwak Coffee, made with  coffee beans procured from the faeces of a mongoose like Asian animal, amazing isn’t it! Though I didn’t want to taste some. The trip ended with a visit to the ruins of a Buddhist monastery the Goa Gajah Cave built around the tenth century.

The excitement of the next day was evident in all of us when we heard we were heading towards the Tanah Lot Temple, built on a low jutting cliff over the huge, blue Indian Ocean. The view of the temple with its unique Balinese architecture and the blue waves with their white frothy crown lashing against the shore was definitely a photographer’s or an artist’s dream destination. One could wade into the sea and see the temple at close quarters. The cool waters of the sea brushed aside the afternoon heat. We now headed towards our much awaited trip on a cruise, the Sunset Dinner Cruise, where we were treated with some delicious food and some traditional Balinese dance performances…. Couldn’t ask for more!

The famous Ulluwatu Temple was our destination on the fourth day. Two temples built on two tall cliffs facing the tremendous ocean. The various shades of blue and green were so evident in the waters which were definitely not calm, rather quite dangerous, held us glued to one spot. The beauty and the awe of the place yet the calmness and the serenity of the temples made the place seemed almost heavenly. We also enjoyed some amazing sea rides at the Benoa Beach from where we went to the Turtle Island and held and feed turtles and also had the weird yet unimaginable experience of holding a python…. with its scaly muscular movement and its awesome size and length.

How can one forget the shopping part of any journey? On the fifth day we returned to the hotel with our bags full of wooden artifacts, statement jewelry pieces, apparels, hair and nail accessories, creams and lotions, food items…. You name it, we got it.

Bali is definitely a paradise island and a must visit place.

Tips for the tourist:

  • Do keep in mind that there is a huge currency difference between Indonesian Rupeeya and Indian Rupees; 1 USD = 13,600 IDR (Indonesian Rupeeya) approx.
  • Please bargain before you actually purchase artifacts and other things from local shops.
  • Best place to buy souvenirs is from Krishna Souvenir Shop, Denpasar.
  • Day time temperatures can rise up, so keep yourself hydrated, carry water bottles.

LEGAL EDUCATION FOR YOUR KIDS

PROTECT YOUR BRAND WITH TRADEMARKS
Parents should be aware and guide their children about the legal education of branding.
“Branding design is just the beginning. Once you’ve completed the process, it’s important to
legally protect that identity”.
The brand represents your reputation and business in the public eye and a trademark legally
protects those aspects of your brand that are unique and specific to your company. A trademark
is a specific aspect of your brand which has legal protection as it is a unique identifier for you.
Trademarks can be any specific unique words or phrases such as name, labelling, signatures,
slogans, trade dress, logos, specific combinations of colours, shapes and design layout, sounds,
etc,. If a brand is not legally registered, then any other people can use it without fear of penalty.
If the brand is registered, severe penalties attach to its unauthorized use.
(Example) How to Identify your Brand?
Papa: Kids, have you thought about a special name to our
shop?
Kids: I have thought of a special name Papa “AABUSHAN”
for our shop, it’s very unique.
Papa: Okay, the name has now been decided and the mark has to be legally protected. The
trademark “AABUSHAN” helps us to establish a brand or image of our company. It is our mark
which is going to be used on goods or services or other articles of commerce to distinguish it
from other similar goods or services originating from a different undertaking. We can protect
the name of our shop by a trademark. If we sell a certain quality of jewellery, the customers will
automatically link the name of our shop to the jewellery.
In order to claim monopoly over anything as our ‘Trademark’ we should always remember that
it should not be descriptive of the product or service in respect of which we want to use that
trademark; and no one else is using the same or similar thing as his trademark.

Math Magic

Statistical problems involve multiple operations like multiplication, division and additions. A small mistake in these operations can lead to loss of 5 marks out of 6 in a single question, even though the steps and formulas used by the child are correct.  I have seen this happening multiple times when checking exam papers of high school children. Let’s see how we can prevent these mistakes by cross checking method.  It will help the child being confident and solve the exam paper calmly.

This is in continuation of the method discussed in my earlier article (i.e. checking accuracy of multiplication), the same method can be used to cross check addition, subtraction and division as well. Let’s see the method via the example shown below.

Checking the ACCURACY OF DIVISION

*We will follow the same methodology of dividing the sum of digits of a number by 9 and finding the remainder for all the steps below.

Let’s check a division problem

                                                     1481265 / 4281 = 346, remainder 39

Step 1 – Find the Remainder* from the Dividend 1481265, 1+4+8+1+2+6+5 = 27, Remainder* is 0

Step 2 – Find the Remainder* from the Divisor 4281,     4+2+8+1 = 15, Remainder* is 6

Step 3 – Find the Remainder* from the Quotient 346,     3+4+6 = 13, Remainder* is 4

Step 4 – Find the Remainder* from the Remainder 39,    3+9 = 12, Remainder* is 3

Step 5 — Multiply Remainders* in Step 2 & Step 3 and add remainder* of Step 4,

6 x 4 = 24, 24 + 3 = 27

Step 6 — Find Remainder* of the result in step 5, i.e. 27/9, Remainder* is 0

Remainder in Step 1 = Remainder in Step 6, shows the correctness of the division. This happens because (Divisor x Quotient) + Remainder = Dividend.

Now try using this method for addition and subtraction problems as well!

Online Safety for Children

‘Veena’ google this word and see the results…

Imagine your child has a project to research about the instrument ‘Veena’ and he / she googles ‘ veena’. Would you be comfortable with the links your child would have access to?

Google, YouTube, Blogs and online articles are a great source of information. We all rely on the world wide web even to check the spelling of a word. When our children come home with a homework project, even before we think and use our own knowledge, we tend to look online for resources and samples.

Ms. Archana Badri and Ms. Jayashree of Delhi Public School Electronic City had the Opportunity to attend a workshop on the topic ‘Online safety for children’ Conducted by the British Council. They came back with loads of learning which would be a great set of tips to the parents and teachers.

First and foremost, when you provide the internet to children to browse through, provide them with the correct search terms. For example – instead of telling them to search for ‘veena’ ask them to search for ‘veena musical instrument’.

  • Parents should keep themselves updated with the scams that are prevailing online.
  • ‘HTTPS’ and sometimes a padlock icon to the left of the web address helps determine the authenticity of a website.
  • Invest in good antivirus software and schedule regular scans of the systems.
  • Change passwords regularly to protect from spams and keep privacy.
  • Talk to children often about online safety.
  • Disable pop ups to ensure that children are not exposed to unnecessary information and articles.
  • Advise them not to share personal images and information online.
  • Make it a habit to go through the browsing history often to keep a check on what the children are browsing through.
  • Install parental control software on computers and devices or safe search and safety mode on websites to ensure that children cannot access undesirable websites inadvertently.
  • Check internet provider for broadband security.
  • Internet crime complaint Centre Police HQ hhtp://police.lk~cyber crime/

Thank you Archana Ma’am and Jayashree Ma’am for sharing this gained knowledge with us.

Back to School

‘You can’t start the next chapter of your life if you keep re-reading the last one.

So buckle up, pack your bags, and get ready to start a new day in another fresh year of school.’

It’s another year in school with lots of fun, activities, games……and of course, studies!! The summer vacations are over, and here’s looking forward to some fun with schoolmates again!

During the last two weeks of our pre mid-term examination I was really excited for the summer vacations to begin. My exams went well, and when the vacations began my friends and I had sleep-overs, hosted parties, celebrated birthdays and had loads of fun.

My summer began with playing sports, swimming, eating ice-cream and doing teeny-weeny holiday homework! I also had opportunities to do other cool things like learning a new computer language and building a LEGO crane. But the highlight was a vacation in the USA to meet my cousins and relatives.

I’m really excited to get back to school. I’ll meet my friends after a long time, meet new students and learn lots of new things. Although our session had already started in March, I’m glad to go back after almost 50 days!

Here’s an ode to another exciting year at school

School starts, the summer break is done
But do not fret, it’ll be loads of fun!
You’ve been in the mood to eat ice-cream,
But they are not allowed in the school regime!

The exams are lengthy and tough,
Yes, they can really be rough!
But if you study in detail,
You will surely not fail!

It’s the start of another school year,
You may get into the bracket of fear!
But worry not my friend, a new school year has come,
Our school is a castle of fun, wherein you will surely succumb!
